SEABRI holds the 2019 annual conference

On January 2nd, SEABRI holds the 2019 annual conference

On January 2nd, the Southeast Asia Biodiversity Research Institute (hereinafter referred to as SEABRI), an organization affiliate to Chinese Academy of Sciences organized, managed and operated by the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden(hereinafter referred to as XTBG), held the 2019 Academic Annual Meeting, it was the same timeXTBG’s 60thAnniversaryseries ofacademic activitieskicked off. The annual meeting aims to strengthen academic exchanges among project team members, promote multidisciplinary intersections and integration of results, and explore future research directions of SEABRI.

At the opening ceremony of the annual meeting, Director Shizhuan ZHANG of the Asia-Africa Department of the International Cooperation Bureau of the Chinese Academy of Sciences delivered a speech saying that since SEABRI’s establishment, it has made remarkable progress in international cooperation, scientific research, and personnel training. I hope that the SEABRI will stay true to its mission and clearly position itself. Hope it will become one of the important pivots of China's "21st Century Maritime Silk Road" through 10 to 20 years of hard work, promote the conservation and research of biodiversity in Southeast Asia, and better serve China's One Belt and One RoadInitiative" . Jin CHEN, director of the XTBG and director of SEABRI, said that The way to happiness is struggle. Since the establishment of SEABRI three years ago,the scientific deployment has been steadily advanced and has achieved gratifying results under the guidance of the leaders of CAS, the International Cooperation Bureau and the academic committee.  In the "2018 Annual Work Report of SEABRI", Jin CHEN summarized the achievements of organization, operation, international cooperation, personnel training and scientific research in the first phase of the SEABRI(2015-2018), and deployed the work plan in 2019.

During the annual meeting, an expert group composed of members of the Academic Committee of SEABRI conducted the final assessment of one core research group and eight regional international cooperation fund projects and six key area expansion projects initiated by the SEABRI in 2016; The mid-term assessment of the progress of the four regional international cooperation fund projects and the six key areas expansion projects which started in 2017; The mid-term assessment of the nine Youth Talents Development Programslaunches in 2016 and 10 launches in 2017 were conducted through the way of the poster presentation to evaluate the achievements of SEABRI since its establishment. In order to encourage scientific research personnel to carry out in-depth work, the conference set up the “excellent project” selection process. Academician Zhihong, XU chairman of the Academic Committee ofSEABRI, served as the chairman of the jury and presided over the project review.

After intense debates and heated discussions, Yunhong TAN, the core team of plant biodiversity and conservation research group, was awarded excellent Project. Songhu WANG, Tuanyao CHAI's "Excavation, Mechanism Analysis and Hybrid Rice Technology Experiment Demonstration of Resistant and Low Cadmium Rice in Myanmar", Xiaohua JIN's "Tracheophyte Diversity Survey and Biogeography Research in Northern Myanmar" Project, Weiwei ZHOU's "Based on the study oftree of life in Megophryidae the formation of diversity pattern of Southeast Asian species " project and Xiangyun ZHU's "Burma Leguminosae Species Diversity Cataloging " project won the regional international cooperation excellent project. Zhonge HOU's "Evolutionary Pattern of Southeast Asian Jumping Shrimp and Its Diversity Formation in Terrestrial Habitats" project won the excellent project of key area expansion project. Li Jiatang's "Research on the Systematic and Biogeographical Studies of the Species of the Tree Frogs of Kurizalus", Qiang LIU's "Investigation on the Diversity of Orchid Plants in Northern Burma", and Jie YANG's "Discussion on the Diversity of Tropical longitude and latitude Tree Species differentiation and its formation mechanism based on the Ecological Position of Traits" project, Hui LI's "Sino-Myanmar against brown planthopper rice new material creation and molecular breeding utilization cooperation research" project, Liang CAO's "Vietnam North Central cave fish survey and systematic taxonomy research"project won excellent Youth project. SEABRI will continue to fund the excellent projects.

Academician Zhihong XU concluded at the end of the meeting that the first phases of SEABRI’s projects have made good progress from faculty investigation to molecular research. After many large-scale joint scientific expeditions, a large number of new groups have been discovered, and a group of young teams are gradually growing . SEABRI should stay true to its mission, focusing on biodiversity research in Southeast Asia, in addition to animals and plants, taking into account the surrounding environment, and related microorganisms, and promote the overall research. Moreover, scientific research should pay attention to data, results sharing, and brainstorm. At the same time, lay emphasis onpractical research and contributes to agriculture, environmental protection and people's livelihood in Southeast Asian countries, and truly achieves mutual benefit. While cultivating young talents in Southeast Asia, we must also pay attention to the cultivation of young talents in our country and make progress together.
